Adam Sandler couldn’t help but joke about his daughters’ casting in Happy Gilmore 2.

At the end of the film, the actor, 58, and his eldest daughter, Sadie Sandler, made a meta reference.

“You’re a very cool kid,” Adam’s character, Happy, told 19-year-old Sadie, who plays Charlotte, a fellow attendee of Happy’s Alcoholics Anonymous group.

Charlotte responded, “You’re a very cool guy. You remind me of my dad.”

Happy looked over at Charlotte and asked, “Yeah?” The pair then shared a sweet and knowing smile.

Sadie isn’t the only member of Adam’s family who snagged a role in the comedy’s sequel. Adam’s 16-year-old daughter, Sunny Sandler, had a major part in the movie, as she played his daughter, Vienna. Adam’s wife, Jackie Sandler, also had a cameo as Vienna’s dance teacher.

In Happy Gilmore 2, Happy struggled personally following the death of his wife, Virginia Venit, who is portrayed by Julie Bowen. Happy — who also shares four sons with Virginia — couldn’t find his love for the sport of golf following Virginia’s passing. He ultimately lost their home, and his sons had to take on menial jobs to support themselves.

After learning that Vienna has the chance to attend a prestigious ballet school in Europe, Happy decided that he wants to give the sport another try to help make his daughter’s dreams come true.

Ahead of Happy Gilmore 2’s release, Adam opened up about what it was like to work alongside his daughters in a major way.

“It is just all happening fast. Kids are growing up − they really are into acting and movies, and it’s always been our thing to work with our friends and family,” he said in a July interview with USA Today. “It’s cool to see them getting better. They work hard and they go to school for it, and they love it. So, yeah, I’m just proud. Couldn’t love them more.”

Bowen echoed similar sentiments about the family atmosphere on set.

“Everybody wants to feel like they’re home, and Adam does that for hundreds of people,” the actress exclusively told Us Weekly earlier this month. “When he talks about all the cameos and the guest stars, he doesn’t talk about getting a good performance out of them. He talks about thanking them for giving up their time, for standing around for 12 hours and doing their part. That has never changed. He’s always been that way.”

Happy Gilmore 2 is available to stream on Netflix now.
