Amanda Knox publicly reunited with her ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito for a red carpet event in honor of Hulu’s scripted show about Meredith Kercher’s murder trial.
Knox, 38, and Sollecito, 41, posed with the actors playing them in The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox — Grace Van Patten and Giuseppe De Domenico, respectively — at the Tuesday, August 19, premiere for the show in New York City.
The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox, which premiered on Wednesday, August 20, is an eight-episode series that will chronicle the period after Knox was wrongfully accused, her time in prison and her journey to freedom. Margaret Qualley was originally set to play Knox in Hulu’s scripted series, but she exited the project and Van Patten, 28, replaced her.
The actual trial took place after Knox was accused in 2007 of murdering her roommate Kercher while they were studying abroad in Perugia, Italy. Knox was sentenced to 26 years in prison after she and then-boyfriend Sollecito were both convicted of the crime despite a lack of evidence.

An appellate court later found the former couple not guilty in 2011, but they were again found guilty three years later during a retrial. The Italian supreme court cleared Knox of Kercher’s murder in 2015, and she was exonerated.
Ivorian migrant Rudy Guede was sentenced in 2008 to 30 years in prison for Kercher’s murder after his DNA was identified at the crime scene. His sentence was later reduced, and he was released from prison in November 2021.

Knox has previously shared her side of the story, but she exclusively told Us Weekly how grateful she felt about being involved in The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox.
“It really comes down to this idea of do I have a voice and does my voice matter in how a story is told? That is what Hulu has recognized, and they’re taking a chance on that to say, ‘Yes, actually the subject does have a perspective that is valuable and that matters,’” she shared with Us in March. “And we don’t have to pretend that this world is full of objective screenwriters who are not bringing their own stuff to the project. I think that that’s a really interesting experiment that is being made right now.”
Knox continued: “And of course, I’m really honored to work alongside Monica [Lewinsky], who is my mentor. She’s executive producing as well. I can’t speak a lot about it yet because we’re still in production. But I’ll just say that it is another manifestation of me having the opportunity to be recognized as someone who has a valuable perspective.”
The limited series takes inspiration from Knox’s memoir Free: My Search for Meaning. In the book, which was released in March, Knox mentioned reuniting with Sollecito during a secret trip back to Italy with husband Christopher Robinson.

“Since our joint acquittal in 2011, Raffaele had been traveling the globe, looking for somewhere, anywhere outside of Italy, to settle,” she wrote. “Since then, our lives had been moving in very different directions. Raffaele was still searching for a career and a family, while I had found my partner in Chris and had my beautiful daughter Eureka to brighten my days. We kept in touch through WhatsApp, trading messages every so often. But I wouldn’t say we were close, even though the connection we have can’t ever be severed.”
Knox recalled coming face to face with Sollecito nearly two decades after the trial.
“I felt a lot of overlapping things: nostalgia for what could have been, sheer gratitude at how my life had turned out, sadness for Raffaele, who was still searching for many of the things I’d found,” she continued. “He was sweet to join me here, given the circumstances, and to jointly reimagine this intimate experience as a familial one. He didn’t hold it against me, even as I saw that longing look in his eyes as he watched me and Chris and Eureka.”
Knox concluded: “I imagined that a part of him was thinking of that alternate universe, where Meredith was never killed and we were never arrested, and we went to Gubbio that day, and perhaps these many years later, happily married, we were returning with our baby to revisit a place from our early courtship. I was certainly imagining that myself.”
New episodes of The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox air Wednesdays on Hulu.
