Amy Schumer is recovering from back surgery after undergoing a spinal procedure following a surfing injury.

The actress and comedian, 44, shared a photo via Instagram on Friday, August 8, of herself using a walker. “Since my surfing injury back in the day my L5 has been killing me,” she captioned the image. “Today I got a laminectomy! It’s a short recovery and when I’m feeling better I will buy a bra!”

According to Mayo Clinic, a laminectomy is a surgical procedure to relieve pressure on the nerves by removing the arched back piece of vertebrae.

Schumer appeared to be in good spirits following the surgery, as she also shared a funny anecdote from her hospital bed via Instagram Stories.

Everything Amy Schumer Has Said About Her Decision to Get Liposuction

“Overheard post back surgery ‘pickle ball keeps this place in business,’” Schumer wrote over a selfie.

Schumer is no stranger to health woes. The Kinda Pregnant star experienced a difficult pregnancy with her son, Gene, now 6, after battling hyperemesis gravidarum — a severe form of morning sickness that lasts throughout pregnancy and often requires hospitalization. Gene, whom she shares with husband Chris Fischer, was born via C-section due to Schumer’s endometriosis, which ultimately led her to have a 2021 hysterectomy to alleviate symptoms related to the condition.

“The doctor found 30 spots of endometriosis that he removed,” she shared via Instagram at the time. “He removed my appendix because the endometriosis had attacked it. There was a lot of blood in my uterus.”

She also had liposuction in 2022, explaining at the time that she “reached a place where I was tired of looking at myself in the mirror.”

A few years later, Schumer revealed she had been diagnosed with Cushing syndrome, a hormonal disorder caused by elevated cortisol in the blood. She learned of her health battle after press appearances in 2024 sparked comments from followers, including doctors.

“They were, like, ‘No, no … something’s really up. Your face looks so crazy that we think something’s up,’” Schumer told “Call Her Daddy” podcast host Alex Cooper in January 2025.

Amy Schumer Says Puffy Face Comments Led to Cushing Syndrome Diagnosis

“I had a breast reduction, C-section … and so I was getting these steroid injections, and so it gave me this thing called Cushing syndrome, which I wouldn’t have known if the internet hadn’t come for me so hard.”

Schumer has also been open about her journey with weight loss medications, including Ozempic and Wegovy.

“I was one of the people that felt so sick and, like, couldn’t, like, play with my son,” she told Andy Cohen in 2023.

She’s now on Mounjaro, admitting in March 2025 that she’s having a “really good experience” with the tirzepatide product.
