Brad Pitt’s mom Jane Etta Pitt has died at age 84.

Brad’s niece Sydney Pitt confirmed the news via Instagram with a lengthy tribute.

“My sweet Grammy, Jane Etta, we were not ready for you to go yet but knowing you are finally free to sing, dance, and paint again makes it a tad easier,” Sydney shared in an Instagram caption on Wednesday, August 6. “If you knew Grammy, you knew she had the biggest heart. She cared deeply for everyone and everything, no questions asked.”

Sydney added, “She taught me how to paint, how to be strong, how to lead with kindness, to love Jesus through everything, and to find joy in the smallest things. She made up the silliest games just to make us laugh, and she believed in fairness, in putting others first, and doing good simply because it was the right thing to do.”

Sydney wrote that there was “no limit” to the love that her grandmother gave.

“I don’t know how we move forward without her. But I know she’s still here in every brushstroke, every kind gesture, every hummingbird. She was love in its purest form,” she concluded. “We were truly blessed to have her to love on growing up and I know she lives on through each of us.”

TMZ was first to report the news of Jane’s death on Wednesday. Her cause of death has not yet been revealed. Brad, 61, has yet to publicly address his mother’s death.

Brad was raised by Jane and his dad, William Pitt, in Missouri. She was a school counselor and often made appearances on the red carpet alongside her son. (Jane and William also share Brad’s brother Doug, 58, and sister Julie, 56.)

Brad recently discussed his mom with a rare mention during the F1 press tour in June.

“I got to say hi to my mom because she watches you every morning,” Brad told Savannah Guthrie during a Today show appearance at the time, blowing his mom a kiss. “To Jane Pitt. Love you mom.”

Jane also made headlines in January when scammers used her name to get $800,000 from a woman who believed she was dating Brad and thought he needed money for a kidney treatment.

It was reported that the French woman was contacted in 2023 by Jane’s alleged Instagram and noticed that her account was “apparently linked to the actor.” The scammers, who then posed as Brad, said his “mother has spoken … a lot about her.” The woman claimed that a relationship started to develop as she received “poems and numerous declarations” from the scammers.

“There are so few men who write you this kind of thing,” she stated. “I liked the man I was talking to. He knew how to talk to women, it was always very well done.”

The woman was convinced it was “fake” at first but started to fall for it. “I’m not used to social media and I didn’t really understand what was happening to me,” she added at the time.

Brad eventually addressed the situation in a statement.

“It’s awful that scammers take advantage of fans’ strong connection with celebrities,” a spokesperson for the actor told E! News at the time. “But this is an important reminder to not respond to unsolicited online outreach, especially from actors who have no social media presence.”
