Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence may be family now via their married children, but the Shrek 5 star doesn’t think they’ll pass on the funny gene to their grandkids.
“[People are] like, ‘Oh, yeah! Those gene pools are gonna — how funny is that kid gonna be?'” Murphy, 64, told Extra at the Los Angeles premiere of his action-comedy film The Pickup on Sunday, July 27. “And I bet the kid’s probably not going to be funny at all. Be a serious child.”
Murphy’s son Eric, 36, quietly married Lawrence’s daughter Jasmin, 29, back in May, the Haunted Mansion actor announced on The Jennifer Hudson Show on May 29.
“They went off, everybody was making the big wedding plans, and then they decided they wanted to do something quiet with just the two of them,” Murphy revealed at the time, sharing that the kids had a small church ceremony about two weeks prior.

Murphy joked that he and Lawrence, 60, didn’t have to pay for a “big wedding” this way.
“They just had the two of them and the preacher. They had a quiet little thing. So I think we’ll have a big party or something,” he added.
Jennifer Hudson asked Murphy if he would sing at Eric and Jasmin’s second wedding ceremony, to which he replied, “No, I ain’t singing … Martin will sing at the wedding. Yeah, that’d be funny.” He added that he’d “maybe” be willing to duet with Lawrence.
“We’re in-laws,” he said of the Bad Boys star.
In his interview with Extra, Murphy said that he and Lawrence were “friends for years and years” before their kids tied the knot.
“So, you know, it’s just, you know, cool to say, ‘Hey, now we’re in the family,’ but we, Martin and I have been buddies for years,” he added.

When asked what family get-togethers are like now, Murphy said, “Really normal. It’s not … I think people think … jokes are just flying — and it’s not like that.”
Jasmin and Eric’s wedding came six months after the pair got engaged, sharing a video of the proposal via Instagram. Eric brought his girlfriend of more than three years to a room filled with flower petals, candles and a giant red heart on the wall, which served as the backdrop as he dropped to one knee and popped the question. When Jasmin saw the ring, she said, “It’s beautiful! Oh my gosh,” and gave an enthusiastic “yes” to his proposal.
“11.27.2024. We’re engaged!! God truly blessed us with a love that feels like destiny. We couldn’t be more excited for this next chapter ,” the caption read. “Special thank you to everyone who made this moment so beautiful!!”
While it’s unclear when the couple started dating, Eric confirmed the romance in June 2021 when he shared photos of Jasmin online and declared that he was “head over heels in LOVE with” her.

Jasmin later revealed how she and Eric met in an interview with In Touch Weekly in January 2022. Surprisingly, their famous fathers weren’t involved.
“My uncle actually introduced us — it wasn’t even our dads,” she explained. “And they’ve done two movies together. They’re friends. I don’t even know, it’s crazy, but we met through my uncle and, you know, we became really good friends.”
Jasmin said she and Eric “bonded on a lot of things.”
“Obviously, we have similar backgrounds so we understood each other on a certain level, and over time it just, you know, became more,” she added.
