Fans have eagerly been anticipating another Crazy Rich Asians project since the film was released in 2018 — and now they may not have to wait much longer.

In February 2025, Deadline confirmed that a series adaptation of the rom-com, based on Kevin Kwan’s books, is in the works at Max. Adele Lim, who cowrote the 2018 film, will return as the showrunner and executive producer alongside director Jon M. Chu.

While the cast and storyline have yet to be confirmed, sources close to production confirmed to Deadline that the series will not replace the sequel to Crazy Rich Asians as Chu and Warner Bros. Pictures continue to develop the project.

One month after the series was announced, Chu explained why a TV show is a great way to continue the story from the film.

“We needed more real estate, that was the reality,” he told The Hollywood Reporter in March 2025. “We developed the movie over and over and over again and we’re still working on a version of something that I won’t talk about now, but the TV landscape allowed us to use all the characters.”

The original 2018 film detailed Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) and Nick Young’s (Henry Golding) relationship after she learned that his family was actually very wealthy in Singapore.

Golding, who starred as Nick Young in the movie, told Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live in June 2025 that they are working on the series and aiming to get it released for “first quarter … next year.”

“There are scripts hanging around but they haven’t been passed on yet,” he explained. “I haven’t read anything, but I hear it’s promising.”

Harry Shum Jr.

Shum Jr., who played billionaire Charlie Wu in Crazy Rich Asians, also confirmed that a series is in the works, but did not mention whether or not he would be reprising his role.

“I know they’re focusing on a television series right now. They’re trying to really elevate that,” Shum Jr. exclusively told Us Weekly in June 2025. “And you know, I think the hardest part is to try and just give the fans the world that they expect and that they fell in love with, which is incredibly hard to do with so many characters, so many rich stories.”

Shum Jr. explained that he knows that the showrunners are “working hard” to give fans what they want.

“So I feel very hopeful,” he said to Us. “I know I’ve said this before, but I actually feel very, very, very hopeful this time that we’ll get something done and in the books.”

In March 2025, Chan, who played Astrid in the 2018 film, noted that she couldn’t “say any more than what’s already out there” about the TV show.

“Jon Chu has said that it’s been such a long time since the film came out and it’s so beloved — they’ve wanted to wait until they get it really right before bringing everybody back,” she explained to the Wall Street Journal at the time. “So I’m crossing my fingers and willing it to happen.”
