Monica and Brandy are hitting the road together nearly three decades after dropping their iconic duet “The Boy Is Mine.”

The singers announced in June that they were coheadlining their first tour together. The tour is named after the pair’s hit song, “The Boy Is Mine,” which was released in 1998 and went on to be the No. 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 13 weeks. The musicians also took home the Grammy for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group.

Following their tour announcement, Monica and Brandy appeared on the Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon to talk about the show. During the appearance, Brandy revealed the tour was “27 years” in the making. (“The Boy Is Mine” found some resurgence in 2024 after Ariana Grande released a remix of their song.)

“It’s divine timing,” Brandy said.

Brandy also shared that she got the idea for the song after watching an episode of Jerry Springer that featured a segment topic with the same name. While she did not know Monica before recording the hit, Brandy was “always a fan” and “wanted to work with her.”

“So I called her up and asked her if she wanted to be part of the song and she said yes,” Brandy recalled. “And here we are.”

Monica did sign on for the song, however, she was worried that people would think she and Brandy were “fighting” — turns out, she was right.

“People still think we were fighting,” she quipped. “So I don’t know if that’s the greatness of the song or something else but it did just start something completely different.”

What Have Brandy and Monica Said About ‘The Boy Is Mine’ Tour?

In the press release, Brandy called the tour a “full-circle moment” for her and Monica.

“Monica and I coming together again isn’t just about the music — it’s about honoring where we came from and how far we’ve both come,” she said. “‘The Boy Is Mine’ was a defining chapter in R&B, and to share the stage all these years later is bigger than a reunion — it’s a celebration of growth, sisterhood and the love our fans have given us from day one.”

Monica echoed similar sentiments by expressing her “love” for the tune, Brandy and their fans.

“This tour is a celebration of our history, our impact, and the fans who have grown with us,” she said. “Brandy and I have been on our own unique journeys, and coming back together in this way is a reminder of the power of respect, strength and real music. We’re giving the people what they’ve been asking for, and doing it with grace, love and purpose. God’s timing perfectly aligned us.”
