‘Outlander’ Prequel Series ‘Blood of My Blood’ Premieres This Month

Starz will travel even further back in time for the upcoming prequel series, Outlander: Blood of My Blood.

In February 2024, production officially began in Scotland on Outlander: Blood of My Blood, which will consist of 10 episodes and will follow the parallel love stories of both Jamie and Claire Fraser’s parents.

Starz’s Outlander, based on the historical fantasy series of novels by Diana Gabaldon, stars Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe as Jamie and Claire, respectively. The 16-episode first season of Outlander premiered on Starz in 2014. Based on Gabaldon’s 1991 novel of the same name, Outlander follows World War II nurse Claire Randall as she is pulled back in time to 18th-century Scotland, where she falls in love with Highlander Jamie Fraser.

In 2022, Gabaldon teased via her blog that she had a prequel novel about Jamie Fraser’s parents in the works under the working title “A Bird in the Hand” that would be published after the 10th and final novel in the Outlander series. Additionally, she revealed at the time that a prequel series had been picked up by Sony and Starz. Blood of My Blood was officially given the green light in January 2023.

Does ‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ Have a Release Date?

Outlander: Blood of My Blood premieres on Starz Friday, August 8, at 8 p.m. ET. Episodes will air weekly on Fridays at the same time in the U.S. and at 9 p.m. ET in Canada.

Who Is in the ‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ Cast?

In February 2024, the main cast of Outlander: Blood of My Blood was announced, and it did not include either Heughan or Balfe as it is largely focused on their parents. Per Variety, Harriet Slater will star as Ellen Mackenzie, and Jamie Roy will portray Brian Fraser.

Hermione Corfield will star as Julia Moriston, with Jeremy Irvine as Henry Beauchamp. Slater and Roy will portray Jamie’s parents while Corfield and Irvine will play Claire’s.

Weeks later, Variety confirmed that four more stars were set to join the cast. Rory Alexander was cast as a young Murtagh Fitzgibbons Fraser (originally played by Duncan LaCroix), Sam Retford is set to star as Dougal MacKenzie (originally played by Graham McTavish), Séamus McLean Ross as Colum MacKenzie (originally played by Gary Lewis) and Conor MacNeill as Ned Gowan (originally played by Bill Paterson).

Six more actors were announced to join the show’s cast in April 2024. Sally Messham will play Mrs. Fitz, who is Ellen’s maid and Murtagh’s aunt, while Terence Rae will portray Arch Bug, according to Deadline. Sadhbh Malin will also star as Jocasta Cameron, along with Ailsa Davidson as Janet MacKenzie, Annabelle Dowler as Lizbeth and Harry Eaton as Private Charlton.

What Is ‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ About?

Per the official description of the series provided by Starz, Blood of My Blood focuses on “two parallel love stories set in two different time periods, with Jamie’s parents in the early 18th century Scottish Highlands and Claire’s parents in WWI England.”

“We’re thrilled to be telling the stories of these two couples,” said Outlander showrunner, executive producer and writer Matthew B. Roberts in a February 2024 statement per Variety. “The origins of their relationships explore universal themes that transcend time periods and we’re so excited for fans to discover and fall in love with these characters and their love stories the way they have with Claire and Jamie.”

What Did We Learn From the ‘Blood of My Blood’ Trailer?

Time travel is a big part of Blood of My Blood based on the July 2025 trailer, which shows Julia being transported back to 1714 after her and Henry’s car is in an accident, and she goes flying. Henry travels to the same time period himself, on a search for his love.

While in 1714, Julia and Henry’s paths cross with the Clan MacKenzie, Clan Fraser and Clan Grant. Ellen and Brian, for their part, are consistently being torn apart by their circumstances and their families, according to the trailer, but will seemingly stop at nothing to find their own happily ever after.

Will There Be a Season 2 of ‘Blood of My Blood’?

Ahead of the series premiere, Starz announced in June 2025 that the show was picked up for a second season. The following month, the Blood of My Blood cast began production on the next chapter.

“The passion and talent our cast and crew have poured into Outlander: Blood of My Blood has been extraordinary, and we’re thrilled to continue these epic love stories in season 2,” showrunner Roberts said in a statement at the time via Deadline. “Just as audiences fell in love with Jamie and Claire, we hope viewers will be enamored by these new couples when they meet them this summer.”
