The Devil Wears Prada 2 is currently filming in New York City, but fans can’t stop talking about the sequel’s stars shooting what appears to be a funeral scene.

Photos of Anne Hathaway and Stanley Tucci dressed in black surfaced in August 2025, with the costars looking somber as they walked side by side. The pair are reprising their characters, Andy Sachs and Nigel Kipling, respectively, a dream that was 19 years in the making.

The snaps from the set sent fans of the original 2006 film into a tailspin online, speculating if one of the franchise’s beloved characters dies. Due to Meryl Streep’s absence from the photos, some believe that’s a clue to her character, Miranda Priestly, possibly being killed off.

Clues About a Funeral Scene in ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’

In the photos in question, Hathaway wore a long black trench coat with a black silk dress underneath featuring a sheer neckline. Tucci donned a black suit with a paisley tie and a hard-to-miss red ring on his left hand.

Andy and Nigel work in high fashion, and we’ve never really known the characters to dress conservatively in all black. The wardrobe choices for this scene feel very intentional. The shoot took place on a dreary day in Manhattan’s Central Park, with Tucci carrying a black umbrella. At one point, the duo sported black sunglasses and linked their arms together, as if bracing themselves for something major.

All signs are pointing toward this being a funeral or some kind of emotional scene. It still remains to be seen if we will be mourning one of the character’s fashion careers or a death.

Though Streep was not seen in the funeral-esque photos, she has been spotted filming at different locations around the Big Apple.

Once the photos of Tucci and Hathaway dressed in black surfaced on X and Instagram, wheels began turning in fans’ heads about why Streep was not featured in the pictures.

“Miranda dead?!?” one person speculated on X, while another echoed, “Soooo Miranda dies. Got it got it.”

“Someone is gonna die, Miranda?!?” a third person said, as a fourth person wrote, “This better not be for miranda priestly.”

“Oh they killed Miranda Priestley,” a fifth person predicted.

Could Another Character Get the Ax?

While it’s too soon to jump to conclusions about whether or not a character will die, others weren’t so certain that producers would kill off Streep’s character that we love to hate.

“Oh emily died?” one person wrote on X, referring to Emily Blunt’s character, who got hit by a car and was hospitalized in the first movie.

Another person theorized what the plot of the film could potentially be, as it’s been kept pretty tight-lipped since production began in June 2025.

“We can’t be certain who dies in the scene,” an X user wrote. “But what if the whole plot is Miranda is sick so she contacts Andrea and convince[s] her to take over Runway because Emily wants it too. So the new devil is Emily…”
